Southern Methodist University (SMU) is a private, coeducational university of higher education in University Park, a residential neighborhood just five miles north of downtown Dallas, Texas.
Established in 1911 by the United Methodist Church, SMU strives to provide high-quality academic programs in more than 100 majors and minors. It is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
SMU is classified as a Carnegie Foundation Doctoral/Research University-Extensive institution, a standing accorded to universities that offer a broad array of baccalaureate programs and award 50 or more doctoral degrees in 15 or more disciplines. SMU grants bachelor, masterís, professional, and doctoral degrees through its seven schools: Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences, Cox School of Business, Meadows School of the Arts, School of Engineering, School of Education and Human Development, Dedman School of Law, and Perkins School of Theology. An honors program also is included in the curriculum.
The 175-acre park-like campus includes a number of state-of-the-art facilities among its 75 buildings. The university library system includes nine libraries that hold more than three million volumes. The Meadows Museum, at the Meadows School of the Arts, boasts a notable collection of Spanish art.
In addition to the Dallas campus, the university operates satellite campuses in Plano, Texas, and Taos, New Mexico. Nestled in the mountains of northern New Mexico, SMUís Taos campus delivers various summer courses. The site includes a 13th-century Indian pueblo that was excavated by archaeology students. SMU-in-Legacy, located at Legacy Business Park in Plano, offers noncredit and credit courses for adults and young people. International study is provided through 24 programs in 13 countries.
SMU is included among the top third of national universities in the guide, "America`s Best Colleges." It also is nationally ranked in U.S. News & World Reportís "Guide to Colleges."
