Native Americans, California, Great Basin and Plateau Regions

The following is a representative sample of general locations and original names of tribes in the Far West region of North America.

California

  • Northwestern: Hupa, Shasta and Yurok
  • Northeastern: Achumawl, Atsugewl and Northern Paiute
  • Central: Miwok, Pomo and Yokuts
  • Southern: Cahuilla, Chumash and Kumeyaay
  • Great Basin

  • Eastern California: Washo, Owens Valley Paiute and Tubatulabal
  • Nevada: Washoe, Western Shoshone and Kawaiisu
  • Utah: Gosiute, Ute and Paiute
  • Plateau

  • Central and eastern Oregon: Colville, Klamath, Umatilla and Walla Walla (Warm Springs)
  • Central and eastern Washington: Chelan, Spokane, Yakama and Kalispel
  • Northern Idaho: Nez Percé, Cayuse and Kalispel
