Colleges and Universities
University of Virginia
Est. 1819

The University of Virginia, also called UVA, is a research university in Charlottesville, Virginia. The institution is accredited by Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

The city also is affectionately known as "C-ville" or "Hooks-ville," to UVA students.

The university was established in 1819, by Thomas Jefferson – the third president of the United States. The first class was granted in 1825, and the first degree was conferred in 1828.

In 1987, the university grounds were declared a World Heritage site on UNESCO's prestigious World Heritage list. It was ranked as the nation’s best public university in 1993, by U.S. News & World Report.

The university encompasses the School of Architecture, College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the McIntire School of Commerce, School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration, School of Law, the Curry School of Education, School of Continuing and Professional Studies, and the University of Virginia Health System.

A network of primary and specialty care, the health system is made up of four components - School of Nursing, School of Medicine, Medical Center, and the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library.

Through its academic units, the University of Virginia confers 48 bachelor’s degrees in 46 fields, 94 master’s in 64 fields, six educational specialist degrees, two first-professional degrees in law and medicine, and 55 doctoral degrees.

Further, it offers interdisciplinary majors, off-grounds programs, honors programs, independent study, student-designed majors, and teacher education programs.

The sprawling campus is located about eight miles from the Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport (CHO).

The Rotunda, the campus centerpiece, is a remarkable architectural achievement. The building and its surrounding lawns together form the Academical Village, which has been a model for many universities across the country. The campus grounds also include a Heritage Repertory Theater and the University of Virginia Art Museum.

The University of Virginia library system includes 17 school and department libraries, which jointly hold more than 4.9 million books and related research materials.
