Augusta Museum of History is located in Augusta, Georgia. Established in 1937, the museum displays an award-winning permanent exhibition on the history of Augusta and the Central Savannah River Area. The museum aims to preserve and interpret the past of Augusta and its environs for the education and enrichment of present and future generations.
Spread over 6,500 square feet, the museum exhibits the people and forces that shaped Georgia’s second city. The collections depict a rich and fascinating past, from a 10,000 year-old projectile point to a 1914 locomotive.
One of the most notable exhibits includes a multimedia display that traces 12,000 years of local history, The Art of Healing, a history on health care in Augusta; and changing exhibits representing the people and events in the Central Savannah River Area. The museum also preserves documents, photographs, drawings, prints, newspapers, and other paper artifacts relating to the region's history. The collection boasts more than 6,000 items, including the detailed architectural drawings of the Confederate Powder Works and a Civil War collection.
The museum’s recent permanent exhibit, the Susan L. Still Children’s Discovery Gallery, assists children in learning history in a fun and hands-on way. The museum schedules docent-led tours for school groups as well as adults.
