De Witt Clinton

Politics and Public Service, 1769-1828

De Witt Clinton

De Witt Clinton was born in Little Britain, New York, the son of James Clinton, who had served in the French and Indian and Revolutionary wars. Clinton was educated at Columbia College (later University) and worked as a secretary for his uncle, the first governor of New York State.

Clinton served in the state legislature, the U.S. Senate and as mayor of New York City. At that post he championed many progressive ideas — public sanitation programs, an early welfare system, and the establishment of the New York City school system. Clinton also served in the state senate and as lieutenant governor. In 1812, he ran unsuccessfully for president, losing to James Madison.

From 1817 to 1821 and 1825-28, Clinton was governor of New York and used that position to advance construction of the Erie Canal, a project of vital importance to New York City and the farmers and manufacturers in the interior.
