World War I Attack on the Gulflight May 1, 1915
The American tanker Gulflight was torpedoed by a German U-boat in the waters between the Scilly Islands and the southwest English coast. The ship was heavily damaged, but remained afloat. Three American lives were lost. German authorities offered an apology for the attack on a neutral ship, but refused to guarantee a change in tactics.
