Washougal Washington |
Washougal is a Clark County community along the Washington side of the Columbia River - a twin city of Camas.
Washougal is near the end of the last bad stretch of rapids on the Columbia River, which Oregon Trail emigrants had to brave in order to reach the Willamette Valley before the opening of the Barlow Road around Mount Hood.
Washougal was the first place settled by American pioneers in what would become Washington. The members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition camped near here on their return trip up the Columbia River.
Of special note, the Pendleton Woolen Mill has been in operation since 1912, and still produces the acclaimed woolen products.
The Washougal River, noted for its excellent fishing, joins the Columbia here.
Washougal is part of the Portland-Vancouver, Oregon-WA metro area.
