Richland Washington

Richland is located in Benton County in southern Washington, at the confluence of the Columbia and Yakima rivers. Along with Pasco and [kennewick], it is one of the Tri Cities.

The area was settled in 1863. This farming village of 250 was taken over in 1942 by the U.S. Government for an atomic bomb development plant. The city was built from 1943 to 1945 to house project employees and the town grew to 11,000. Federal control of the city was gradually relinquished by 1958.

Today Richland, population 38,708, is the headquarters of the Hanford Works nuclear power complex. A point of interest is the CREHST Museum, which houses exhibits on Hanford history, environmental restoration, nuclear technology and many other subjects.

There is also a Richland, Georgia.

Richland is part of the Richland-Kennewick-Pasco, WA metro area.
