The war began with the attack by airplanes of the Empire of Japan against Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The Japanese had a number of successes, including the capture of the Philippines from the United States and Singapore from the British, but American naval forces regrouped and began to slowly press the Japanese back to their home island.
