Lane County stretches from the summit of the Cascades on the east to the Pacific Ocean on the west, crossing the Willamette Valley in between. The county seat and largest city is Eugene. The economy that has supported the county's population of 300,000 has been highly timber dependent in the past, but is developing a broader base including high tech industry and tourism.
