The county seat of Lane County, Oregon, as well as its largest city, is Eugene. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 314,901, an increase of 31,989 over the 1990 census.

Lane County stretches from the summit of the Cascade Mountains on the east to the Coast Range Mountains and on to the Pacific Ocean in the west, crossing the Willamette Valley in between. The principal city of Eugene is a major crossroads as well. The Interstate 5 freeway passes north and south on the eastern side of Eugene. Highway 126 bisects Eugene east and west and Highway 58, along with the Amtrak rails, heads southeast through the Cascade Mountains to eastern Oregon where it meets Highway 97.
The economy that has supported the county's population of 300,000 has been highly timber dependent in the past, but is developing a broader base including high tech industry and tourism.
Lane County is the most popular cycling destination in Oregon, and the region plays host to some of the best mountain biking in the state as well.
