South Slough Nat'l Estuarine Reserve

South Slough Nat'l Estuarine Reserve Charleston, Oregon (Birds) image

The South Slough preserves miles of valuable wetlands near Charleston.

This 4,700 acre natural area encompasses tidal marshes, mudflats, and open water channels. Visitors to the reserve may explore the many trails, or choose to canoe or kayak for a unique exploration. In addition, visit the interpretive center and take part in ongoing educational programs.

The wreck of the New Carissa was considered a serious threat to the slough, but fortunately, relatively little oil leaked and not much of it reached the sensitive areas in the slough.
