Located in the Mount Hood National Forest, Zigzag Ranger District. Elevation is 2600 feet. The Old Maid Flats area was formed by glaciers and more recently began to fill up with alluvial deposits, (mud flows), from Mount Hood, Old Maid Flats is surrounded by lodge pole pine. The Sandy River flows through the flats on its way from the ice fields of Mt. Hood.
Old Maid Flats is designated as a personal use mushroom harvest area. Commercial harvesting is no longer allowed. Some visitors plan to take the one-hour hike above tree line to the Elliott Glacier. Hikers are encouraged to have clothing and hiking shoes suitable for mountain conditions (off trail and 40-80º F temperatures).
The Lost Creek Campground has a paved, wheelchair accessible trail along the creek through dense mixed conifer forest. 5 tent sites, (Walk-in), 5 RV sites, up to 22 ft. in length. Facilities include: Handicap facilities, potable water, garbage service, fire grills, vault toilets and picnic tables. Leashed pets are permitted.
For birders, Hammond's Flycatcher, Hermit thrush and Western Tanger may be seen in the spring.
