North Fork John Day Wilderness |
The rugged North Fork John Day Wilderness is located in the Umatilla National Forest and Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, and provides an abundance of natural diversity. The wilderness is popular with big game hunters (Rocky Mountain elk and mule deer), and fishermen. There are more than 130 miles of streams, 40 miles of which provide spawning habitate for Chinook salmon and steelhead.
Hikers and horseback riders enjoy over 100 miles of trails. The area is accessible from early spring to late fall from several trailheads.
The North Fork John Day drainage was a bustling gold and silver mining area in the middle to late 1800s. Visitors to the wilderness can view old mining structures, dredged ditches, building foundations, and other traces.
