Mt. Hood Loop Trail |
In the Oregon's Mt. Hood Territory, the highest point in Oregon, Mount Hood offers photogenic scenery as a backdrop for some of the states best birding. The Mt. Hood Loop Trail crosses the Columbia River Gorge Nat'l Scenic Area, the same area traveled by Lewis & Clark Expedition in 1805.
Birds observed along the Mt. Hood Loop include Lewis's Woodpecker, Clark's Nutcracker and Clark's Grebe, (These named to honor the explorers). Osprey, Bald Eagle and waterfowl have been sighted on the Hood River Delta, Ainsworth State Park and Viento State Park
Hood River Valley, (Hood River (The River)), on the "dry side" of Mount Hood offers many birding opportunities including Tucker Park and Toll Bridge Park. Continuing up the Cascade Slope to Bonnie Butte. Bonnie Butte is well known as a renowned birding region, especially for raptors.
Little Crater Lake, The Clackamas Lake Ranger Station, Clackamas River at Promontory Campground and Fish Creek Campground on down to the Zigzag and Sandy River all offer breathtaking views as backdrops for a variety of birding opportunities.
