The birth of Mitchell is closely tied in with the 1862 discovery of gold in Canyon City. Mitchell was a popular stopping place for wagons loaded with mining supplies headed to the Canyon City gold rush.
Mitchell is located along Highway 26 between Prineville and John Day in the northern foothills of the Ochoco Mountains and is known as the "Gateway to the Painted Hills." Local attractions include the Old Oregon Hotel, a 400 pound live black bear, the Bank of Mitchell (last bank in the US to go broke during the Great Depression), and several unique gift shops that feature items from the local area such as thundereggs and juniper furniture. The town is also a favorite roosting site for several native wild turkeys. Mitchell continues to be a favorite stopping place for travelers along Hwy 26.
