The frontline service provided encompasses a population of less than 8,000 residents, spread over 10,000 square miles and located in various small ranching operations throughout the county. Although some patrons travel for several hours to reach our hospital, their alternative would be to continue down a desolate stretch of Hwy. 20 to Bend, Oregon--130 miles to the west of Burns.
Harney District is a community-driven hospital with a sound business operation. Currently, cutting edge computer technology is being installed at the hospital where information sharing software will enable our staff to share vital information with other practitioners in the county, including the physicians' practice (High Desert Medical Center).
