Josephine County Historical Society

Schmidt House Museum and Research Library

This brick and shingle Craftsman-style home was built in stages between 1900 and 1911 for the family of Hannchen and Claus Schmidt. The daughters gave it with original furnishings and collections of household linens, toys, clothing, books, and family albums to the Society.

Guided tours and discussion of the exhibits are offerd.

Open to the public for a small user fee (free to members), the Research Library has a collection of books, manuscripts, family histories, maps, clippings and photographs on the history of Josephine County and Southern Oregon.

Patrons may order reproductions of historic photographs for a fee. A small bookshop contains a fine selection of newspapers, maps, calendars, and regional history books and pamphlets including several publications of local history written by society members.

Hours are 1:00 to 4:00 from Tuesday through Friday.

In May of 1960, the Josephine County Historical Society became a non-profit organization to collect, preserve, exhibit, and interpret local history.
