Hoover Campground

Barrier-Free Access is Moving into the Forest

Although Hoover Campground is just an hour from Salem, it is high in the western Cascades and far from the pavement and civilization that we associate with universal access. It has served as a testing ground for barrier-free access to the forest.

The campground earns its title as a model of accessibility from disability groups because everything is either fully accessible or highly usable including restrooms, campsites, interior trails, boat ramps, and other features.

A major attraction at Hoover Campground is a 200-foot-long fishing pier. Oregon Paralyzed Veterans Association helped design the pier to offer ergonomically correct fishing opportunity for a person sitting in a wheelchair.
