The community of Hood River, (ZIP Code: 97031), Population (2002 est.): 6,075, Elevation: 160' Incorporated: 1901, is located in Hood River County west of The Dalles, between Mosier and Cascade Locks along Interstate 84.
Also situated near the Seneco Fouts Memorial State Park and within the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.
On October 29, 1792, WR Broughton and his men of the Vancouver Expedition discovered and named Mt. Hood, in honor of Lord Hood of British Admiralty. The Lewis and Clark Expedition paved the way and named the glacial stream now known as the Hood River. Followed by Lewis and Clark were trappers, fur traders, and pioneer settlers.
This community offers a spectacular view of both Mount Hood and the Columbia River and is a haven for ever-increasing numbers of wind-surfers. Nearby recreational activities include fishing, camping, skiing, and hiking. Hood River County is now the leading production of Anjou Pears in the world and one of Oregon's major apple growing regions. Fruits and timber products are still the major sources of revenue for this town.
Oh yes, A river runs through it, called, not surprisingly, Hood River.
