Highways, Byways, and Scenic Drives

Twelve segments of Oregon highways have been designated as official Scenic Byways. Highways are nominated by local residents, businesses and agencies that are interested in preserving and enhancing scenic roads. To qualify as a scenic byway, a highway must have high national or statewide appeal. In June, 2000, the Federal Government announced that the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway has achieved its designation as an All-American Road, one of only 57 in the country. Previously named to this top category were Historic Columbia River Highway and Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway.

The first Oregon Scenic Byway was Highway 101 from Astoria to Brookings. The more recent byways are
