Detroit Flats

On the Mt. Jefferson Loop. A part of the Oregon Cascades Birding Trail.

One of two Day Use Areas managed by the U.S.D.A. Forest Service - Oregon at Detroit Lake. The other Day Use Area is Upper Arm - Detroit Lake. Both are within the Willamette National Forest, Detroit Ranger District.

From Detroit, cross the Breitenbush River. Continue 1 block through the stop sign, bear R at the "Y" before the church, then go straight at the second stop sign and continue to the park and Day Use Area parking area.

This marshy area provides habitat to Cascade migrants such as the Loggerhead Shrike, Gray Flycatcher and Shay's Phoebe. Rare species sightings include; Sage Thrasher, Sage Sparrow, American Redstart, Long-Eared Owl and Black-throated Sparrow. The greatest numbers of birds appear in April. The lake water covers the "Flats" starting in May.
