Cathedral Tree Trail |
Accessable to hikers of all ages, this urban trail begins at a parking area off of Irving St. on the eastern edge of Astoria. About 1 1/2 mi long, taking from one to one and one-half hours to reach the Astoria Column. This trail is usable all year long, but can be somewhat slippery and muddy during the wet season. Benches are placed along the trail for quiet rests.
The trail passes through old growth forest and passed the Cathedral Tree. At the Astoria Column, visitors may climb the 166 steps to view the Lower Columbia River Area.
Some of the interesting points viewable are the mouth of the Columbia River, which is one of the most dangerous river bar crossings in the U.S., the city of Astoria and it's Astoria-Megler Bridge to [wa:honepage], the sparsly populated Washington bank of the Columbia River and upstream for a long distance.
