Breitenbush Saddle

On the Mt. Jefferson Loop. A part of the Oregon Cascades Birding Trail.

Near Breitenbush Lake Campground, this birding spot offers a unique opportunity to view up to seven woodpecker species. On the upper Clackamas River in the Mount Hood National Forest and near the Bull of the Woods Wilderness.

From Forest Service Road #46, 16 mi east of Detroit. Go Right on Forest Service Road 4220. Park safely along the road. This site requires road and off-road walking.

For Birders, Woodpeckers are the predominant species here. Up to 7 species of woodpeckers may be seen, including; Black-backed, Hairy, Red-breasted Sapsucker and Lewis Wood pecker. Other bird species that may be seen are; Blue Grouse, Mountain Quail, Northern Pygmy-Owl, Common Nighthawk, Vaux's Swift, Olive-sided, Dusky and Hammond's Flycatcher, House Wren, Western Bluebird, Nashville Warbler, Hermit Thrush, White-crowned Sparrow, Red Crossbill, Pine Siskin and Evening Grosbeak.
