Stony Brook Village |
The charm of today's Stony Brook has its origins in 1940 when philanthropist Ward Melville set out to create a "living Williamsburg" with a blend of housing, business and culture in a New England-like setting. After purchasing all the property in downtown Stony Brook, Melville moved historic houses and raised other buildings to open a vista to the harbour. He personally financed the reconstruction of Stony Brook at a cost of $500,000.
The crescent shaped Stony Brook Village Center was designed around a magnificent Federalist style post office overlooking a sprawling two-acre village green. In fact, the center is considered the first planned business community in the United States. As the Village Center expanded in response to changing demographics, its colonial village atmosphere was kept intact. Today the center's three sections - Harbour Crescent, Inner Court, and Market Square, house more than fifty specialty shops, services and restaurants.
