Poughkeepsie is the seat of Dutchess County, between Fishkill and Hyde Park in the Southern Region of the state. It lies along Highway 9 on the banks of the Hudson River.
The city is the financial, commercial and cultural center for a quarter of a million county residents and the greater Hudson Valley region, and is adjacent to major markets.
Freight and passenger rail service are offered by Conrail, Amtrak, and Metro North. Major highways intersect at Poughkeepsie and network with Interstate 84 and the New York State Thruway. Poughkeesie is the home of Samuel Morse, inventor of the telegraph and Morse Code, and boasts Locust Grove, the Samuel Morse Historic Site. The city is home to Vassar College.
