Manhattan Island is a borough of New York City, bordered by the Hudson and East rivers. It is reached from New Jersey by Interstate Highway 95 over the George Washington Bridge. Interstate 87 connects the area from boroughs to the north, and from the east, Highway 495 approaches through the Queens Midtown Tunnel. Bus and subway systems extend to all sections of the borough.

Manhattan was the original site of New Amsterdam, which became New York when control passed to the British.

Within Manhattan, population 1.5 million, are the skyscrapers for which New York City is famous, along with its financial and entertainment districts. Famous streets here are Wall Street, Fifth Avenue, Park Avenue and Broadway. Attractions include Carnegie Hall, Central Park, Ellis Island, the Guggenheim Museum, the Empire State Building and New York Stock Exchange. The World Trade Center, a former famous landmark, was destroyed by a terrorist attack, which took more than 3,000 lives on Sept. 11, 2001.
