Lake Champlain |
Extending from Canada southward for 120 miles, Lake Champlain varies from a quarter mile to 12 miles wide. Two-thirds of its cubic area lies in Vermont; the rest, except for a small Canadian portion is in New York. Lake Champlain accommodates large vessels and, with its Hudson River connector, the Champlain Canal, makes navigation possible from New York City to Montreal and the Great Lakes.
Legends of Lake Champlain's own version of the Loch Ness Monster have persisted since Samuel de Champlain sighted what he described as a serpentine creature 20 feet long, as thick as a barrel and with a head like a horse.
