Brooklyn Academy of Music

Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), is Americas oldest operating performing arts center. Currently in its 140th year, BAM's first performance was in 1861 at the start of the American Civil War and in 1907 moved to its current location at 30 Lafayette Avenue in Fort Greene after the original Brooklyn Heights premises burned. BAM functioned as a community bellwether, raising money for war relief, in addition to presenting luminaries of the arts such as Enrico Caruso, Isadora Duncan, and Arthur Toscanini; in the 50s and 60s, performers included Paul Robeson, Lili Pons and the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra.
