Forty miles northwest of Truth or Consequences, Winston and Chloride were founded by miners in the 1880s. Winston's historic buildings include a school, carriage house and store. Today, a store/gas station and a bar are open for business. Chloride has old stores, saloons, cemeteries and an old "hanging tree." To the west lies the Gila National Forest, 2.7 million acres of timber, forage and wilderness.
