The Heron Lake State Park is set among tall pines, and has been designated a "quiet lake" where boats operate at no-wake speeds only. It is known for sailing, fishing, cross-country skiing, and hiking. A marina, visitor center and campsites are available. Located 8 miles west of Tierra Amarilla; five miles north on US84 and west on NM95. Also, Parkview State Trout Hatchery is located nearby; trout production and fishing at small lake, located two miles north of Tierra Amarilla off US84.
