Cowles is in San Miguel County, and in the Central New Mexico region. This small community is located northeast of Santa Fe off Highway 63 within the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The Cowles campground is for the most part a tent campground along the Winsor Creek, near the Rio Pecos. It is close to the Cowles ponds, where fishing is seemingly popular.
