Gasparilla Island State Recreation Area |
Gasparilla Island is one of a chain of barrier islands extending along the Gulf coast of Florida and is separated from the mainland by Charlotte Harbor and Pine Island Sound. Named for the legendary pirate Jose Gaspar who reportedly used the island in the 1700s as a hiding place between raids, fishing and sailing have always been part of the site's history.
One of the island's most interesting features is the still-working US Coast Guard wooden lighthouse on the southern end, first used in 1890.
Swimming, shelling, fishing, and picnicking are popular activities on the island; two picnic areas with covered tables offer scenic views of the ocean. Access to the island is via the Boca Grande Causeway at CR775 and Placida.
