Dead Lakes State Recreation Area

Dead Lakes is said to have been formed when sand bars created by the current of the Apalachicola River blocked the Chipola River; the ensuing high water killed thousands of trees in the floodplain, giving the area its name. Today, this area near the Apalachicola National Forest is teeming with wildlife, and is abundantly covered with pines, magnolia and cypress trees.

The beautiful wetlands area features many nature trails, as well as a campground; year-round recreation includes fishing, canoeing, boating, hiking, and picnicking; a boat ramp is available. Located 1 mile north of Wewahitchka, off State Hwy 71.
