Castillo de San Marcos National Monument |
This national monument and grounds encompass 25 acres in downtown St. Augustine, the oldest continually occupied European settlement in the continental United States. The Castillo is the oldest masonry fort in the country; circa 1672-95, the building is made of coquina, a soft local shellrock.
Authentically re-enacted cannon firings are presented weekends from Memorial Day-Labor Day, and at other special times throughout the year. Inside, museum exhibits detail the fort's history; each room focuses on a different theme or time period, including 'Battles,' 'Artillery,' and 'Native Americans;' also represented are a Spanish and British barracks, and a storeroom. Various examples of Spanish iron and bronze artillery are exhibited on the gundeck, or terreplein (roof).
A variety of ranger-led and interpretative programs are sponsored throughout the year. Open daily, except Christmas Day; located just north of the Bridge of Lions.
