Canaveral National Seashore |
The 57,000-acre wilderness area lies just north of the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral; its landscape takes in shallow lagoons and dunes along 25 miles of unspoiled Barite Island beaches. One of the Cape's space-shuttle launchpads can be seen plainly from within the seashore's southernmost boundary.
Playalinda and Apollo beaches are accessible by car, but Klondike is reserved exclusively for the enjoyment of hikers. Playalinda Beach is closed 3 days prior to a shuttle launch and reope ns the following day; next scheduled launch listed on National Forest Service website.
Swimming, boating, surf fishing, and other park-sponsored activities can be enjoyed all year; the seashore's nature and historical trails may be more enjoyable during cooler winter months. The park's information center in New Smyrna Beach (7611 S Atlantic Ave) is open daily.
