Audubon House and Gardens |
The first restoration project in Key West, the Audubon House is considered the gem of the island's restoration movement. A visit to the Audubon House & Tropical Gardens is a look into local history and folklore, while the finest tropical gardens in the state offer a lush one-acre view of abundant foliage such as orchids and Bromeliads. An herb garden and 1840-style nursery provide a historic look at gardening, while native plants and exotics provide a landscape reminiscent of old Key West.
On display inside are 28 first edition works of the renowned ornithologist. The Audubon Gallery of Fine Art, located on the third floor, has almost an entire collection of the artist's original mint condition handpainted lithos from the Royal Octavo Series (1840-59), in three editions, available for purchase. The rare series contains renderings of 500 North American birds. Personalized and group tours offered; garden available for events.
