Ancient Spanish Monastery Cloisters

Church of St. Bernard de Clairvaux

Built in 12th-century Spain, the monastery was home to Cistercian monks for nearly 700 years. The cloisters were seized, sold, and converted into a granary and stable in the mid-1830s, and in 1925, the monastery and its outbuildings were sold to American tycoon William Randolph Hearst. Dismantled stone by stone, the edifice arrived on US shores in 11,000 wooden crates, which remained unassembled until 1964 when it was erected to serve as a tourist attraction by its new owners.

Billed as 'The Oldest Building in America,' this beautifully serene and historic facility is available for weddings, receptions, parties, and meetings by reservation; call for donation schedules. Open daily, closed major holidays.
