Anclote Key State Preserve |
Located 3 miles off Tarpon Springs, this unique island preserve is accessible only by private boat. Anclote Key is home to at least 43 species of birds, as well as many rare & endangered species. Of special interest is the lighthouse (circa 1886) at the southern end of the island, which served as a beacon to ships for years after President Grover Cleveland declared Anclote Key a lighthouse reservation. Stabilization and restoration of the historic lighthouse is underway, as well as the addition of a new pier; plans call for a park ranger to be installed in a restored keeper's dwelling.
The shallow Gulf waters surrounding the island provide excellent swimming; private camping is available, arrangements must be made in advance.
