In August of 1850, Washington was the highest point on the South Yuba River at which gold had been discovered with over 1000 miners. Washington, California is located at the base of the Washington Ridge in the Sierra Nevada's between Grass Valley and the intersection of State Road 20 and I-80, on the South fork of the Yuba River. Washington is located northeast of Sacramento between Nevada City and Truckee along Highway 20 near Spaulding and Fordyce lakes.
There is also a Washington, Connecticut.
