Villa Montalvo Center for the Artsand Arboretum |
Formerly the home of San Francisco mayor and U.S. Senator James D. Phelan, the estate now functions as a center for fine arts. Built in 1912 in the Mediterranean style, the house shares the garden with a formal garden and trails to lookout points in the surrounding hills.
Villa Montalvo was named for the popular 16th-century Spanish writer Garcia Ordonez de Montalvo, who coined the name "California". The arboretum has about 400 species of plants and 85 species of birds. Please call for admission times and prices as they are subject to change.
