Tijuana River National Estuarine Reserve |
The Tijuana River Estuary is one of the few salt marshes remaining in Southern California. The site is an essential breeding, feeding and nesting ground and key stopover point on the Pacific Flyway for over 370 species. The Reserve spans 2,500 acres and offers four miles of walking trails, taking visitors into prime bird watching areas and down to the river mouth where Tijuana River meets the Pacific Ocean. There are also horse rentals and equestrian trails at the south end of the Estuary. The Reserve is the endpoint of the drainage basin for the Tijuana River and its tributaries, a 1,735 square-mile watershed that lies one-third in the United States and two-thirds in Mexico.
The visitors center provides interpretive programs for children and adults, art classes, guided field trips, and videos on a regular schedule. Permanent exhibits entertain and educate all ages through displays of estuary flora and fauna.
