Stanislaus National Forest |
The Merced, Mokelumne, Clavey, Stanislaus River and Tuolumne rivers all cut deep canyons through the Stanislaus National Forest, whose 900,000 acres outline the northwestern boundary of Yosemite National Park in the western Sierra Nevada. Popular summer activities include picnicking, camping, swimming, boating, canoeing, rafting and hunting. Myriad opportunities for fishing are offered by more than 800 miles of rivers. There is an abundance of hiking trails and snowmobiling and cross-country skiing are also popular during the winter.
Reservations at Pinecrest campground can be made through the USFS Reservation Center at 800-280-2267.
Emigrant and Carson-Iceberg wildernesses are on the eastern side of the forest. Obtain permits at the forest office.
