Stretching west from Griffith Park in Los Angeles to the Ventura County line, the NRA contains 150,000 acres of rugged mountains, steep canyons, rolling woodlands and 50 miles of beach. Within its boundaries are 70,000 acres of city, county, state and federal parklands.
Recreation includes hiking, picnicking, bird watching, camping, swimming, snorkeling, fishing, surfing, biking and horseback riding. Reservations are required on some hikes.
Cheeseboro Canyon off Cheeseboro Road in Agoura Hills has more than 2000 acres of rolling oak woodland that is suitable for hiking, horseback riding and picnicking. Circle X Ranch has 1665 acres of trails. The ranch is free, and camping is by fee. Franklin Canyon Ranch off Frankly Canyon Dr north of Beverly Hills is a wilderness area amid a highly developed suburban neighborhood. Paramount Ranch on Cornell Road off Kanan Road in Agoura Hills was owned by Paramount Studios and used for western movies.
