Prairie Creek Redwood State Park |
Set aside in the early 1920's, Prairie Creek is a 14,000 acre sanctuary of old growth Redwoods. The park has over 280 Save-the-Redwoods League memorial groves. With over 70 miles of hiking trails through verdant forests and along wild and scenic beaches, Prairie Creek offers hiking, nature study, wildlife viewing, beachcombing, fishing, picnicking and camping. All trails lead through the world's tallest trees. There are all day hikes or short leisurely strolls. The terrain is relatively mild with only 800 feet of elevation gain throughout the park. Some of the wildlife available include gray whales, rabbits, mink and the infamous banana slug.
To reach the park from Highway 101, take the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway exit. The visitor center and the Elk Prairie Campground are at the southern end of the parkway.
Birdwatchers can see spotted owls and the marbled murlet. The park is wheelchair accessible.
