Pinnacles National Monument |
The 16,000 acres of Pinnacles National Monument are filled with precipitous bluffs, spires, and crags of colorful volcanic rock, which have been further contoured over a period of many millennia by the forces of wind, rain, heat and cold.
The entrance to the monument is 35 miles south of Hollister. It is strictly a hiking park, although it is possible to view some formations from a car. Hiking trails vary from simple one-mile jaunts to challenging hikes of more than seven-miles.
In addition to the geological features, the monument has an abundant bird population as well as deer and wildflowers. The plants and animals with the monument are examples of a chaparral ecosystem.
Picnic facilities are available. Pets must be kept under physical control. Admission is charged per vehicle. The most popular period for visiting is spring.
