Picacho State Recreation Area |
100 years ago Picacho was a Gold Mining - Yesterday and Today mining town with 100 citizens. Today the site is a state park, popular with boaters, hikers, anglers and campers. The park offers diverse scenery including beavertail cactus, wild burros and thousands of migratory waterfowl as the park is on one leg of the Pacific Flyway. Eight miles of the lower Colorado River are the recreation area's eastern border. The park features a main campground, 54 campsites and 2 boat-in group sites. The sites have picnic tables with fire rings and drinking water as well as chemical toilet sand a solar shower.
To reach the area, take the 24 mile (mostly unpaved) road north from Winterhaven near the Mexican border. Day use and campground areas are open all day and night.
