The Newport Dunes first opened in 1958 and was later acquired by San Diego hotelier, Bill Evans. Today, the Evans' 28-year-old daughter, Anne Evans Quinn, still overseas the resort's operations and has created the daily calendar of activities. It is the $16-million renovation of 1989 that gives the campground its ritzy feeling. The architect's firm who designed the camp is the same one who designed the Ritz Carlton in Dana Point and the Four Season Hotel in Newport Beach!
It is $95 a night (highest waterfront/large site/holiday rate). Come September 14, "winter rates" apply: Large, beachfront sites (25' by 45') are $45 during the week, $47 during weekends. The resort 's smaller sites can be reserved for tent campers for $23 to $25.
