Named for conservationist John Muir, Muir Woods National Monument covers 560 acres on the SW slope of Mount Tamalpais, 17 miles northwest of San Francisco, across the Golden Gate Bridge along Highway 1.

One of the most accessible of the remaining redwood groves is contained within the monument. Some of the coast redwoods reach 250 feet in height and have diameters of 12 feet. Douglas fir, maple, oak, and bay laurel are also found in the forest. Neither picnicking nor camping is permitted at the monument and no pets are allowed. Vehicles longer than 35 feet cannot enter.
