Hemet California |
Hemet has been long known as an agricultural area. Hemet has also developed into a major trading area for western Riverside County and is well established as a retirement center.
The Hemet area was first inhabited by the Cahuilla Indian tribe. In 1887, Hemet began to form as a city with the formation of the Lake Hemet Water Company. Work on a dam in the San Jacinto Mountains commenced in 1891, and the Hemet Dam was completed in 1895. The City of Hemet was incorporated in January, 1910.

Hemet is located in Riverside County south of San Bernadino between Riverside and Indio along Highway 74 near Canyon Lake and Palm Springs.
Hemet is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino, California metro area.
